Central Okanagan Hospice Seminar Provides Support for Grieving Youth

The Central Okanagan Hospice Association recently hosted a seminar designed to equip community members with the skills and resources necessary to support grieving youth. The seminar was held in response to the growing need for specialized support for young people who have experienced the loss of a loved one.

Understanding Youth Grief

The Central Okanagan Hospice Association hosted a seminar on May 12, 2023, to provide guidance and support to individuals working with grieving youth. The seminar, titled “Supporting Grieving Youth: A Comprehensive Approach,” explored the unique challenges and needs of children and adolescents who have experienced loss. Experts in the field of bereavement counseling presented evidence-based strategies for supporting these young individuals. Participants learned about the developmental stages of grief, common reactions to loss, and effective ways to communicate with grieving youth. They also discussed the importance of creating a safe and supportive environment, involving youth in their own healing process, and addressing their physical, emotional, and social needs. “It’s crucial that we equip ourselves with the knowledge and skills to support our young people when they are grieving,” said Jane Smith, executive director of the Central Okanagan Hospice Association. “This seminar provided a valuable opportunity for professionals and caregivers to enhance their understanding and develop practical tools to assist grieving youth.” The seminar was attended by counselors, teachers, social workers, and other professionals who work with children and youth.
