Free ION Transit Rides to Mark 5th Anniversary

In celebration of its 5th anniversary, the ION light rail system in Waterloo Region will offer free transportation to riders on the weekend of June 22-23, 2023. Since its launch in 2018, the ION has transformed transportation in Waterloo Region, connecting commuters, students, and visitors across the region. To express gratitude for the community’s continued support, ION will provide free rides on both days to encourage residents to explore the system and its benefits. Throughout the weekend, ION trains will operate on their regular schedule, with service every 10-15 minutes. Riders will be able to travel between the following stations: * Conestoga * Fairway * Northfield * Bridgeport * Uptown Waterloo * King * University of Waterloo * Erb * Sportsworld * Waterloo Park * Central Frederick In addition to the free rides, ION will host a series of events and activities at select stations to celebrate the anniversary. These activities will include: * Live music and entertainment * Food and beverage vendors * Informational booths * Prize giveaways “We are excited to celebrate the 5th anniversary of the ION with our community,” said Tom Galloway, Director of Transit Services for the Region of Waterloo. “The ION has become an integral part of our transportation system, and we are proud to offer free rides as a way to thank our riders and encourage even more people to experience its benefits.” Residents are encouraged to take advantage of this opportunity to ride the ION for free and explore all that Waterloo Region has to offer.
