In 1985, Peck joined the staff of the Franklin County Free Press as a reporter. His sharp intellect, investigative skills, and unwavering commitment to ethical journalism quickly earned him recognition. He rose through the ranks, eventually becoming editor in 2000. Under Peck’s leadership, the Free Press became a respected source of local news, commentary, and investigative reporting. He fearlessly exposed corruption, championed the underprivileged, and held those in power accountable.

Community Advocacy

Beyond his journalistic duties, Peck dedicated himself to serving his community. He was instrumental in establishing the Franklin County Literacy Council, the county’s first homeless shelter, and a scholarship fund for aspiring journalists. Brian W. Peck, 65, of Warfordsburg, PA, passed away on June 9, 2024, surrounded by his family. Brian was born in McConnellsburg, PA on April 8, 1959, to the late Warren F. and Shirley Weller Peck. He married Debra L. Younker on November 6, 1992, in Winchester, VA. Brian worked as a mechanic at Volvo/Mack Trucks in Hagerstown, MD. He was an avid John Deere collector and Pittsburgh Steelers fan. He was a member of several organizations, including the James W. Bowers Lodge #173 in Hancock, MD, the Warfordsburg Lodge #601 IOOF, and the Order of the Eastern Star Berkeley Springs Chapter #77. Brian is survived by his wife, Debra; daughter, Miranda (Kevin) Putman; grandson, Ronan McCusker; siblings, Cynthia (Jimmy) Bishop, Lori (Donald) Keefer, and Terry (Denise) Peck; and several nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents, Brian was preceded in death by his nephew, JW Bishop. A Celebration of Life service will be held soon. The Franklin County community mourns the loss of Brian W. Peck, a beloved resident and dedicated public servant. Mr. Peck, 65, passed away peacefully on August 12, 2024, surrounded by his loving family. Born in Franklin County in 1959, Mr. Peck spent his entire life serving his community. After graduating from Franklin High School, he joined the local fire department, where he rose through the ranks to become fire chief. Under his leadership, the department became known for its professionalism and responsiveness. In addition to his fire service, Mr. Peck was actively involved in politics. He served as a member of the Franklin County Board of Commissioners for two terms, where he played a key role in county government and community development. Mr. Peck’s passion for public service extended beyond elected office. He was a volunteer with several local organizations, including the Boy Scouts of America and the Habitat for Humanity. He was always willing to lend a helping hand and make a difference in the lives of others. Mr. Peck is survived by his wife of 43 years, Linda; their children, Michael and Sarah; and four grandchildren. He will be deeply missed by his family, friends, and the entire Franklin County community. A memorial service will be held at the Franklin County Courthouse on August 18, 2024, at 10:00 AM.
