Chef Wan’s Expensive Home RenovationChef Wan’s Expensive Home Renovation Malaysian Chef Wan recently shared on social media his experience with a costly home renovation that has left him dissatisfied. Details of the renovation were shared on Chef Wan’s Instagram page (@_chefwan58), where he revealed that the first phase of the renovation cost RM421,000, paid from a total bill of RM527,000. This included repairs to the shower screen, fence, and the installation of a fountain in the garden. Despite paying 80% of the initial bill, Chef Wan alleges that minimal work was completed. He claims that upon returning from a trip to Greece, he discovered that the bathroom and driveway remained largely untouched. The renovation company has since provided Chef Wan with an additional quote for RM500,000, bringing the total renovation cost to over RM1 million. The company claims that the steep increase is due to rising material costs. Chef Wan expresses concern over the exorbitant cost of the proposed materials, particularly the use of Nyatoh wood for the doors, which he estimates will cost around RM83,500. The chef’s frustration stems not only from the high costs but also from a lack of communication and unsatisfactory progress on the renovation. He alleges that the company did not provide proof of work when requested and became dismissive of his concerns. Chef Wan urges caution to others considering home renovations, highlighting the importance of clear quotes and reputable contractors. He also expresses regret for his initial generosity, believing he may have been taken advantage of.

Famous Malaysian chef Wan recently spent a fortune renovating his house in Raub, Pahang, but the renovation did not meet his expectations.

In his recent IG posts @_chefwan58, Chef Wan shared the quotes he got from the renovation company and said that he paid an amount of RM421,000 of the total bill, RM527,000. This was only the first phase of the renovation.

These works include installing the fountain in his garden, replacing the broken fence, repairing the shower screen and much more. See the screenshots below for more information.

Despite 80% of the total bill having been paid, little work was done.

“There was hardly any progress. She couldn’t even finish tiling the bathroom and driveway when I was in Greece for 2 weeks.”

After returning from his trip to Greece, Chef Wan needed more renovation work. Before they could start on that, he wanted a clear quote.

The renovation company said it will cost an additional RM500,000This means that the renovation of Chef Wan’s house will cost more than RM1 million.

“And their excuse? The materials are expensive. I asked her to replace and repaint my front door, 4 window panels and some electrical work.”

The company claimed that they would only use Nyatoh wood for the doors, which would cost the celebrity chef a large sum. Chef Wan then shared the quote given for the 2nd phase, which would cost him RM500,000.

  • Main Entrance RM25,000
  • 2 bedroom doors (standard door size) RM23,000 each
  • 1 bathroom door RM4500
  • 2 bathroom doors RM4000

The doors alone cost RM83,500.

“Are these the doors of the National Palace or what? This is part of the extra RM500,000 they wanted from me, with the excuse that the electric gate consumes more power,” Chief Wan explained.

Chef Wan expressed his regret that he had previously paid them 80% of the initial quote, because he trusted them enough when he was traveling. He started to distrust, not only when the costs became more expensive, but also when he did not receive proof of work when he asked for it when he was in Greece.

“I confronted them 3 times and lost my patience, but they didn’t seem to care about my opinion. I cried last night thinking about my money and how many victims fell into their trap.”

Chief Wan also regretted his generosity, saying:

“I think I was kind enough to pay her when she said she needed the money.”
