Crews from Clearview Demolition targeted the hall adjacent to the main church building, marking the beginning of the church’s partial demolition. Emergency services on site indicated that the remaining shrine will be demolished in approximately two weeks, once the stained glass windows are carefully removed. Cheam View United Church has a rich history in Chilliwack. Its roots trace back to 1908 when a new Chilliwack Methodist Church was built on the site. In 1925, the Methodist Church merged with the United Church, and in 1953, construction commenced on a larger church to accommodate a growing congregation. The completed church, then known as Chilliwack United Church, opened its doors in 1954. Over half a century later, in 2020, Cheam View United Church was formed through the merger of Chilliwack United, Mt. Shannon United, and Rosedale United. The church has recently partnered with Mamele’awt Qweesome/To’o Housing Society to develop a six-storey mixed-use complex on the property. The complex will offer affordable housing for seniors and low-income residents, continuing the church’s legacy of community service.

Part of a 70-year-old church in Chilliwack was demolished on Wednesday.

Crews from Clearview Demolition were on scene at the Cheam View United Church on the corner of Yale Road and Spadina Avenue, where they demolished the hall next to the main church building on July 10.

According to emergency services on the scene, the shrine will be demolished in about two weeks, after the stained glass windows are removed.

The church has a long history in Chilliwack. The site was originally home to a new Chilliwack Methodist Church built in 1908. The Methodist Church joined the United Church in 1925. In 1953, construction began on a new and larger church to accommodate a growing congregation.

The church was then called Chilliwack United Church and opened its doors in 1954. More than 65 years later, in 2020, Cheam View United Church was born when Chilliwack United merged with Mt. Shannon United and Rosedale United.

Cheam View has partnered with Mamele’awt Qweesome/To’o Housing Society to build a six-storey mixed-use complex, providing affordable housing for seniors and low-income residents.
