Rice, garri, and tomatoes have seen the most significant price increases, with rice rising by 156%, garri by 135%, and tomatoes by 132%. The average price of rice in April 2024 was N1,399, compared to N547 in the same period in 2023. This represents a monthly increase of 13.59% from N750 in March 2024. Garri prices have also escalated, with the average price rising from N363 in April 2023 to N852 in April 2024, a 135% increase year-on-year and 13.59% month-on-month. Tomatoes have also become significantly more expensive, with the average price increasing from N960 in March 2024 to N1,123 in April 2024, a 17.9% monthly increase and 132% year-on-year increase. Other food items that have seen significant price increases include onions, beans, bread, beef, and garri. This has contributed to food inflation reaching 40.5% in April 2024. On a state level, Niger recorded the highest price for a kilogram of local parboiled rice at N1,785, while Benue State had the lowest price at N994. Analysis by zone showed that the average price of rice was highest in the South-West at N1,615, followed by the South-South at N1,565 and the North-West at N1,163.
