LIVINGSTON COUNTY — It’s almost time to start looking at the first semester calendar for local schools. For some, the first day is fast approaching.

Start dates are:

  • Hartland: Wednesday, August 14 (one of the earliest starts in Michigan)
  • Howell: Tuesday August 20
  • Fowlerville: Monday, August 26
  • Brighton: Tuesday 3rd September

The school schedule for Pinckney Community Schools has not yet been finalized.

“I hope we can share it in the coming weeks,” said Rick Todd, superintendent of Pinckney Community Schools.

By starting in mid-August, Hartland’s high school schedule will be more closely aligned with the college schedules, which is beneficial because many students in the district are double majors, said Chuck Hughes, superintendent of Hartland Community Schools.

As with all school districts, the calendar is a negotiated item with the teachers unions.

Hughes said the mid-August start also gives them “more time to learn before classes at the state university and college in the spring.”

The calendar for most districts is marked by a shorter than usual holiday period, starting two days before Christmas (excluding the preceding weekend).

Most counties have a holiday on Election Day, November 5, and the last possible holiday is on Thanksgiving Day, November 27-29.

Semester holidays and staff training days are included in the list below.
