Russia has been accused of a war crime after a major children’s hospital in Kiev was hit by a missile during a large-scale attack on Ukraine, killing at least 37 people.
Italian Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani said “war crimes” should be condemned by the “entire international community” after the attack on a hospital that killed two people and injured 16 others, seven of them children.
Okhmatdyt Hospital was hit by a Russian barrage aimed at five Ukrainian cities, killing at least 37 people and wounding more than 170 others.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said his country would take revenge for the attacks, which his chief of staff, Andriy Yermak, described as “genocide”.
“They are hitting the cities, where there were many people. They are hitting the children’s hospital. There are children. It is a terror that the world must see and respond to. This is genocide,” he said.
Russia denies targeting civilian facilities and claims, without providing evidence, that photographs from Kiev show the damage was caused by a Ukrainian surface-to-air missile.

Rescue workers rush to clear rubble after deadly attack on children’s hospital in Kiev
A major children’s hospital in Kiev has been hit by a rocket attack, following a Russian barrage that killed at least 36 people. Footage obtained by Reuters showed rescue teams digging through the rubble of the Okhmatdyt hospital in the late hours of July 8. More than 150 people were injured in the strikes, which targeted five major Ukrainian cities. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said the country would retaliate. Russia denies attacking civilian facilities and claims the damage was caused by Ukrainian anti-aircraft missiles. Russia has provided no evidence to support that claim.
