Instead of reducing staff, Liverpool has implemented an incentive structure that rewards performance. This strategy has contributed to the club’s recent success both on and off the pitch. According to The Athletic, Ratcliffe is to cut 250 jobs behind the scenes at Old Trafford.
It is believed that the cuts will affect almost all departments of the club.
It follows the appointments of Dan Ashworth as Director of Football and Omar Berrada as CEO, alongside a host of other new additions behind the scenes.
According to the two clubs’ calculations, cutting 250 jobs would leave United with just 862 employees, while Liverpool would be left with 1,008.
United used to have the most employees of any Premier League club, but now Liverpool have that status.
Football financier Stefan Borson estimated in an article on X that United would save around £10m per season from the mass exodus.
That would reduce the company’s total wage budget to £321m, £52m less than Liverpool’s total.
How do United and Liverpool’s salaries compare to other clubs?
United have the third-highest wage bill in the Premier League, after Man City and Liverpool.

However, it is likely that this number will have risen by the time they publish their figures for the 2023-24 season, reflecting their return to the Champions League, where performance-related bonuses are a factor.
Ratcliffe is trying to move the club more in that direction with an incentive structure similar to the model used by clubs like Liverpool.
