A 28-year-old pregnant woman from Erandwane has been diagnosed with Zika virus. The six-month pregnant woman is asymptomatic, said Dr Rajesh Dighe, Assistant Medical Officer of Health, Pune Municipal Corporation.
According to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control, Zika virus infection in pregnant women can cause microcephaly and birth defects in the baby’s brain.

Because of these significant risks, the health department has done this intensified surveillance in Erandwane and Mundhwa areas where other Zika cases have been reported.
“We are monitoring the pregnant woman. She is also consulting her gynecologist and should have an ultrasound done. An ultrasound in the last week of May showed normal fetal growth,” Dr. added. Digh.
