The driver of the car, a 46-year-old woman, was arrested on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving. However, the Crown Prosecution Service (CPS) has decided that she will not face criminal charges because she suffered an epileptic seizure behind the wheel, causing her to lose control of the vehicle. According to Jaswant Narwal, the Chief Prosecutor of the Crown Prosecution Service London Homicide Unit, the driver had no prior medical condition or history of similar seizures. The CPS had thoroughly examined her medical records and consulted with neurological specialists who confirmed that she had indeed suffered a seizure during the incident. The decision not to pursue criminal charges against the driver is based on the understanding that she could not have predicted or prevented this tragedy due to her sudden medical condition. The CPS has emphasized that the public interest is not served by pursuing charges in such circumstances.

Woman who crashed into British school, killing two girls, suffered an epileptic fit and will not face charges

The driver of a car that crashed into a school in England, killing two eight-year-old girls, will not face criminal charges because she suffered an epileptic seizure behind the wheel, the Crown Prosecution Service said.

Nuria Sajjad and eight-year-old fellow pupil Selena Lau died on July 6 last year after the incident at the Study Prep school in Wimbledon, south-west London.

Several others were injured when the car plowed through a fence and crashed into a building.

A 46-year-old woman was arrested at the scene on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving.

Jaswant Narwal, Chief Prosecutor of the Crown Prosecution Service London Homicide Unit, said: “We have carefully considered this complex and sensitive case, taking into account all the material collected as part of the lengthy and detailed police investigation.

“The driver of the vehicle suffered an epileptic fit behind the wheel, causing her to lose control of the vehicle and subsequently drive into the school. There is no evidence that the driver has ever suffered a similar seizure before and she had no previously diagnosed medical condition.

“Because there is nothing to suggest that the driver could have done anything to predict or prevent this tragedy, it is not in the public interest to pursue criminal charges.”

The CPS said it had examined the driver’s full medical records and received evidence from neurological specialists, who agreed the driver had suffered a seizure and that this was the first such medical episode she had experienced.
