San Antonio City Council Approves Plan for New Riverfront ParkSan Antonio City Council Approves Plan for New Riverfront Park San Antonio’s City Council has unanimously approved a plan to create a new riverfront park along the San Antonio River. The park, known as the Mission Reach Greenway, will be located between the Missions Espada and Concepción, covering a distance of approximately 5 miles. The plan calls for the construction of walking and biking trails, picnic areas, play spaces, and kayak and canoe launches. The park will also feature native landscaping and ecological restoration projects to improve the river’s health and biodiversity. The new greenway will connect existing parks and trails along the river, creating a continuous loop around San Antonio. It will also provide opportunities for recreation, relaxation, and environmental education. “This is a groundbreaking project that will transform the Mission Reach area,” said Mayor Ron Nirenberg. “It will create a beautiful and sustainable public space for our residents and visitors to enjoy.” The park is expected to cost approximately $115 million and will be funded through a combination of city funds, private donations, and federal grants. Construction is scheduled to begin in 2024 and be completed by 2027. “This project has been a dream for decades,” said Councilman Roberto Treviño, who represents the area where the park will be located. “Now, thanks to the hard work of many people, it is finally becoming a reality.” The Mission Reach Greenway is part of a larger plan to revitalize the San Antonio River as a vibrant and accessible resource for the city. In recent years, the city has invested heavily in river restoration projects, including the creation of the Museum and Pearl District river walks. The new park is expected to attract visitors and residents to the Mission Reach area, boosting economic development and tourism. It will also provide a much-needed green space in a rapidly growing part of the city.
