Bridgeport, Connecticut: City Council Approves Plan for New Public LibraryBridgeport, Connecticut: City Council Approves Plan for New Public Library The Bridgeport City Council has unanimously approved a transformative plan to construct a new state-of-the-art public library in the heart of the city. The new library will replace the aging McLevy Library and become a vibrant hub for learning, creativity, and community engagement. The new library, estimated to cost $40 million, will be located on a prominent downtown block and will feature: * Over 100,000 square feet of space * A vast collection of books, digital resources, and archives * Dedicated spaces for children, teens, and adults * A technology lab, meeting rooms, and a café * Outdoor green spaces for relaxation and community events The library will also serve as a learning center, with programs and workshops for job seekers, students, and lifelong learners. It will offer computer classes, literacy programs, and specialized services for underserved populations. “This new library will be a beacon of hope and opportunity for Bridgeport,” said Mayor Joe Ganim. “It will provide our residents with access to essential resources, foster a love of reading, and create a welcoming space where people can connect and grow.” The project has been in the works for several years and has garnered widespread support from the community. The former McLevy Library, which served as the city’s main library for over 100 years, has become outdated and inadequate to meet the needs of a growing and diverse population. “This new library will transform downtown Bridgeport,” said City Council President Aidee Nieves. “It will be a place where people of all ages can come together, learn, and be inspired.” Construction of the new library is expected to begin in 2023 and is scheduled to be completed by 2026. The project will be funded through a combination of local, state, and federal grants, as well as private donations. “We are thrilled to bring this vision to life,” said Library Director Kathie Kahn. “This new library will be a game-changer for Bridgeport and will serve as a vital asset for generations to come.”
