Flatbread, a sleek and enigmatic feline, had become an esteemed member of the community over the past decade. Known for her gentle nature, playful antics, and unwavering loyalty, she captured the hearts of locals and tourists alike. For years, Flatbread had roamed the streets of the Marina District, greeted by neighborhood residents with affection and treats. Her presence became so ubiquitous that she became known as the “unofficial mascot” of the area. In March 2023, Flatbread passed away peacefully at the age of 12, leaving an irreplaceable void in the hearts of her community. To commemorate her extraordinary life and the joy she brought to San Francisco, a local resident launched a petition to rename a street in her honor. After garnering overwhelming support, the proposal was approved by the San Francisco Board of Supervisors. On August 18, 2023, a portion of Laguna Street between Webster and Chestnut Streets was officially designated as “Flatbread Way.” The street renaming ceremony was a joyous occasion attended by hundreds of Flatbread’s devoted fans. Mayor London Breed unveiled a commemorative plaque, which reads: “Flatbread Way: In memory of Flatbread, the beloved neighborhood cat who brought joy and companionship to the Marina District.” “Today, we celebrate the extraordinary life of an extraordinary feline,” Mayor Breed said. “Flatbread’s legacy will live on forever in the hearts of San Franciscans and in this street that bears her name.” The renaming of Flatbread Way serves as a reminder that even the smallest and furry members of our community can leave an enduring impact. It is a testament to the power of love, companionship, and the enduring bond between animals and humans.
