Voodoo Doughnut, an iconic beacon of Portland’s quirky spirit, celebrates its 25th anniversary this year. Founded in 1998 by Kenneth “Cat Daddy” Pogson, Voodoo Doughnut has become a destination for locals and tourists alike, drawn by its bizarre and delectable menu. From the classic Voodoo Doughnut, topped with a pretzel stake through the heart, to the bacon-infused Maple Bacon Bar, the offerings are a testament to Portland’s unique culinary sensibilities. “We’ve always tried to be weird and different,” said Pogson, reflecting on the company’s unusual roots. “We never wanted to be just another doughnut shop.” Voodoo Doughnut’s rise to fame was as unconventional as its doughnuts. A photo of a commemorative George W. Bush doughnut went viral in 2004, vaulting the company into the national spotlight. Since then, Voodoo Doughnut has expanded to six locations in Portland and additional outposts in Denver, Austin, Eugene, and Los Angeles. Despite its expansion, Voodoo Doughnut remains deeply rooted in its Portland home. The flagship shop boasts a colorful interior adorned with graffiti and voodoo dolls, creating an immersive experience for doughnut enthusiasts. Over the years, Voodoo Doughnut has collaborated with local artists and businesses to create limited-edition doughnuts that celebrate Portland’s vibrant culture. From the Portland Trail Blazers-themed “Rip City” doughnut to the vegan “My Neighbor Totoro” doughnut, the collaborations showcase the city’s diversity and creativity. To mark its 25th anniversary, Voodoo Doughnut has planned a year-long celebration filled with special events, new doughnut creations, and limited-edition merchandise. On its actual anniversary, April 23, 2023, the company will offer free doughnuts to customers and host a block party in Nob Hill. “This is a huge milestone for us,” said Pogson. “We couldn’t have done it without the support of our amazing customers and team members.” As Voodoo Doughnut celebrates its silver jubilee, it stands as a testament to the power of creativity and strangeness in the culinary world. Its doughnuts have become a symbol of Portland’s offbeat charm, delighting locals and visitors alike for a quarter of a century and counting.
