FPL+ and Council on Aging to Deliver Hurricane Meal Kits to Volusia County Seniors In anticipation of Hurricane Ian’s potential impact on Volusia County, Florida Power & Light Company (FPL+) and the Council on Aging have partnered to provide Hurricane Meal Kits to vulnerable seniors. The Meal Kits will contain non-perishable food items, water, and essential supplies to sustain seniors for up to three days. They will be distributed to seniors who have registered with the Council on Aging’s Meals on Wheels program or who are part of their RSVP volunteer program. “We know that seniors are particularly vulnerable during hurricanes,” said Carol Girard, President and CEO of the Council on Aging. “These Meal Kits will provide them with peace of mind and the resources they need to stay safe and nourished during the storm.” FPL+ is providing funding for the Meal Kits, while the Council on Aging is responsible for purchasing and distributing the supplies. The kits are designed to provide seniors with enough food for three days, which is the recommended amount of time to have on hand in case of an emergency. “We are committed to supporting our customers and communities during hurricane season,” said Ken May, FPL’s vice president of external affairs. “By partnering with the Council on Aging, we can help ensure that our most vulnerable neighbors have access to essential resources.” The Council on Aging of Volusia County will distribute the hurricane meal kits to eligible seniors through its network of senior centers and community partners. To qualify for a kit, seniors must be at least 60 years of age, live in Volusia County, and meet certain income guidelines. “We are grateful for FPL’s support in providing these hurricane meal kits to our seniors,” said Cheryl McCullar, executive director of the Council on Aging of Volusia County. “These kits will give our seniors peace of mind knowing that they have access to food and water in the event of an emergency.” Hurricane season in Florida typically runs from June 1st to November 30th. Residents are encouraged to be prepared for hurricanes by having an emergency plan in place and stocking up on essential supplies, including food, water, a first-aid kit, and a battery-powered radio.
