Wesley Snipes on His ‘Deadpool and Wolverine’ Cameo as BladeWesley Snipes on His ‘Deadpool and Wolverine’ Cameo as Blade Following the record-breaking success of “Deadpool and Wolverine,” Wesley Snipes has revealed his thoughts on his cameo appearance as Blade, a role he reprised after over two decades. Snipes had accepted the end of his “Blade” franchise, especially with Mahershala Ali cast to take over the character in the upcoming Marvel Cinematic Universe reboot. However, an unexpected call from Ryan Reynolds sparked a different path. Reynolds proposed the idea, emphasizing that Snipes’ involvement was crucial for the film’s success. Faced with the prospect of reprising an iconic role, Snipes agreed. Maintaining secrecy about his cameo proved challenging, but he managed to keep it hidden even from his family. The biggest hurdle lay in regaining his Blade-like physique. “I wasn’t Blade-ready, man,” Snipes confessed. “We had to train… I got the body right… with the help of some custom foam that was placed in certain places.” Despite the physical demands, Snipes had an enjoyable experience. He praised Reynolds’ unique approach to the character, finding it both entertaining and distinct from his own portrayal. However, Snipes remains supportive of Ali’s casting in the Blade reboot. He believes in Ali’s abilities and wishes him the best, acknowledging the challenges involved in bringing Blade back to the big screen. Overall, Snipes’ cameo has been met with positive reception from fans and critics, demonstrating the enduring popularity of his Blade character.

Deadpool and Wolverine just broke records on its opening weekend, becoming the highest R-rated opening of all time, both worldwide and domestically, and grossing over $440 million at the worldwide box office… but if you (like me) haven’t seen the film yet, you should know that there are SPOILER forward: As announced at San Diego Comic-Con, Wesley Snipes makes a cameo in the film, reprising his role as Blade, a Marvel Comics character he hasn’t played since appearing in a trilogy of Sheet films from over twenty years ago. Now he’s discussed his cameo with Entertainment Weekly, and below are a few quotes.

Snipes told EW that he had accepted the fact that he was moving on with his life. Sheet franchise, especially since Mahershala Ali has been cast to play the character in an upcoming Marvel Cinematic Universe reboot of the property (a project that has now been in development for five years). Snipes was “continue with them, which is fine. I’ve done three of them and I thought they turned out pretty good. Not that bad… So we’re going to move on to other things, and also bigger and better things. But then he got a text from Deadpool himself, Ryan Reynolds, saying, “I want to talk to you.”

“I didn’t think it made sense to me, but (when) after 20 years you get a call from Ryan Reynolds out of the blue, you’re like, ‘Okay, I’ve got to take this call. Let’s see what this is about.’ He told me the idea… They said, ‘Yeah,’ and ‘It’s a go.’ ‘If you’re in, we’re in.’ Here we are.“Snipes had a hard time keeping the cameo a secret, but he even managed to keep his Deadpool and Wolverine involvement of his family. A bigger challenge was getting back into Blade shape.I wasn’t Blade-ready, man. I don’t walk around like Blade every day, you know what I mean? With a trench coat, sunglasses, and fangs in my mouth. We had to train. We definitely had to get the body, and my biggest concern was being in shape enough to handle the action. They didn’t really tell me what the action was going to be, so I was just preparing for whatever was coming. Luckily, I didn’t have to do as much as I thought I would, because action movies are tough. They’re definitely not easy. About a month in, I got the body right… and then, with the help of some custom foam that was placed in certain places, it was all good to go, baby. Let’s ride!“

Snipes did get to do an action scene – it was filmed in the freezing cold of a European winter, so that wasn’t pleasant. He enjoyed the overall experience, though, and had praise for Reynolds, who starred in Leaf: Trinity with him twenty years ago.”Some of the things he did during that time (on Leaf: Trinity), that’s not really my humor. I’m not that way. So I thought, ‘Well, it’s a little over the top for me.’ But seeing him do it in this context (in Deadpool and Wolverine) made a lot of sense. And when you see him do it and do it well, Ryan is doing something that most people can’t do. He’s unique in that and he’s carved out a fantastic niche for himself doing what he does. Deadpool is Ryan Reynolds all day long. So it was fun. It was fun working with him. It was fun revisiting him.“

That said, Snipes still supports Ali’s casting in the Blade reboot.I shouted at him, told him he has all my blessings and support. I even alluded to the fact that some of the challenges they’re facing right now with the project shouldn’t be attributed to him. It’s not the actor’s fault. There’s a lot more to pulling off this Blade thing. You need a lot of secret sauce to pull off the Blade thing, man. Good luck. But you’re my man.“
