Agartala, July 28: A footballer from Birendra Club allegedly assaulted national referee Tinku Dey after a match in Agartala on Sunday evening.
The victim referee has filed a report at the police station in the west against the goalkeeper, Jhutan Deb of the Birendra club, and two other club officials.
The incident took place tonight. The Birendra Club had earlier in the day lost 3-0 to Tripura Sports School at the Umakanta Mini Stadium. About an hour into the match, while the referee, Tinku Dey, was leaving the field to go home, Jhuton and two other club officials suddenly attacked him near the Birendra Club ground.
The referee’s mobile phone was damaged and he was kicked and punched. The referee managed to escape the clutches of the attackers.
The referee informed the officials of the national football association and the referees’ association about the whole incident.
He later filed an FIR at the West Police Station against Jhuton and two unidentified officials. Tinku Dey said of the incident, “There was no problem during the match. But I never thought that something like this could happen after I left the field. I want a proper investigation into the matter.”
Referees association secretary Narayan Dey condemned the incident and said, “This incident cannot be accepted in any way. We have appealed to the football association officials to take strict action against Jhuton. Moreover, the referees association has also filed an FIR at the West police station. We condemn this incident.”
