Winnipeg police say a 49-year-old man has been charged with speeding and reckless driving after 1 a.m. Saturday.

Officers say they received a report of a suspicious Chrysler 300 near the Winnipeg Police Service (WPS) headquarters at approximately 1:10 a.m. on July 27.

They say the driver first hit the gas pedal and then drove at high speed onto Garry Street.

Police initially pursued the driver and attempted to bring him to a safe stop, but due to public safety concerns, this was short-lived as the driver of the Chrysler continued to drive erratically.

The driver then allegedly ran red lights, made multiple unnecessary lane changes and drove at high speeds, including more than 90 kilometres per hour in downtown Winnipeg.

After some time, police were able to locate the Chrysler, which was stopped near St. Michael Road and Pulberry Street, and the driver was arrested.

The driver was found to be in possession of methamphetamine.

Police have charged 49-year-old Jason Charles Reimer with dangerous operation of a vehicle, fleeing while being pursued by a police officer and possession of a controlled substance.
