The Rangers’ restricted free agent defenseman told The Post Tuesday that he wants to stay in New York, where he’s spent his entire career since the Blueshirts drafted him in the second round in 2016. “This is where I want to be,” Lindgren said by phone ahead of the NHL’s free-agency market opening Wednesday. “I love playing here. I love the city. Obviously, we’ve got a great team here, great coaching staff, great management. “I would love to be back. I know talks are going on behind the scenes. I’m staying out of it as much as I can and letting my agent [Claude Lemieux] handle it. But yeah, I’d love to be back here.” Lindgren, 24, is coming off a breakout season in which he set career highs in points (25) and assists (18) while playing shutdown minutes for the Rangers. He is arbitration-eligible and could file to go that route if he and the Rangers can’t come to a long-term deal. “I’ve been here since I’ve been drafted,” Lindgren said. “This is the only place I’ve ever known. I’ve grown up here. I know this organization inside and out. “So, I think it would probably be a bit weird to play somewhere else. But obviously, it’s a business at the end of the day. We’ll see where it goes.” The Rangers have about $13.9 million in cap space, according to CapFriendly, and they also have two other RFAs to sign — Kaapo Kakko and Alexis Lafreniere. So, it’s possible they won’t be able to give Lindgren the long-term deal he might be looking for. As for his ideal contract? “I don’t get too into the years or the money,” he said. “Obviously, those are important factors. But I’m not going to sit here and speculate on what I want or don’t want. “At the end of the day, both sides have to come to an agreement that they’re both happy with. So, we’ll see what happens.”

The 25-year-old defenseman has emerged as one of the Rangers’ most reliable blue-liners, averaging over 20 minutes of ice time per game last season. He is a physical presence who can also contribute offensively, chipping in with 10 points (two goals, eight assists) in 78 games last season. Lindgren’s agent, Darren Ferris, told Larry Brooks of the New York Post that he has already begun preliminary talks with the Rangers about a new contract. “We started having conversations, but there’s nothing imminent,” Ferris said. “We’ll let the process play out and see where it takes us.” The Rangers have a number of other RFAs to re-sign this summer, including Kaapo Kakko, Alexis Lafreniere, and Filip Chytil.
