This historic ruling, according to ANA, will not only create employment and boost the local economy but also reduce poverty and inequality. ANA Chairman Muhammad Musbahu Basirka praised the Supreme Court’s “historic and courageous” judgment, as well as the efforts of civil society organisations, the media, and other stakeholders who had been advocating for local government autonomy. He highlighted that the autonomy will enable local governments to improve healthcare, education, and infrastructure within their communities. It will also generate employment opportunities, stimulate the local economy, and better address local needs and priorities. Basirka issued a warning to state governors not to interfere with the decision by appointing their allies as local government chairmen. “We understand that this judgment is merely the first step,” he stated. “We urge the federal and state governments to fully respect and implement this ruling.” The Supreme Court’s decision has been welcomed by the ANA, which pledges to closely monitor the situation to ensure that the autonomy is not undermined.

A civil society organisation (CSO), the African Network For Anti-corruption (ANA), has expressed its appreciation for the Supreme Court ruling that granted financial autonomy to the 774 local governments in the federation, saying it will create employment and boost the local economy.

This happened just as the organization promised to “closely monitor to ensure that this autonomy is not compromised.”

The group’s chairman, Muhammad Musbahu Basirka, made the announcement at a press conference, saying the impact would also reduce poverty and inequality among the local population.

He commended the Supreme Court for its judgment, which he described as historic and courageous, while acknowledging the efforts of civil society organizations, the media and other stakeholders who had campaigned for local government autonomy in the country.

He also announced that the autonomy would enable local governments to provide better health care, education and infrastructure for their communities.

It would also create jobs and boost the local economy, respond more effectively to local needs and priorities, and reduce poverty and inequality, he said.

Basirka then warned state governors not to appoint their loyal supporters as local government chairmen, to avoid sabotaging the historic ruling.

“We recognize that this judgment is only the first step. We urge the federal and state governments to fully respect and implement this ruling,” he said.
