A universal fact: flowers always bring joy. Danish floral designer and artist Thilde Maria Haukohl Kristensen can confirm this truth. As founder and creative director of her studio Poppyshe communicates with flowers to create artistic arrangements that end up in a vase, on a canvas, sealed in a table and, recently, on a rug. In her second collaboration with the Swedish interior brand LayeredKristensen has designed two rugs that capture the magic of a blooming garden. The collection is aptly called Magical garden.
Carpet design is a relatively new skill for Kristensen. Until her 2019 collection Layered, which also featured floral motifs, she never imagined her floral creations could be transformed into textiles in this way. “However, as we embarked on this journey together, it became increasingly clear how seamlessly the floral creations could be captured in vibrant floor coverings,” the floral designer reflects.
The new collection is completely handmade with a mix of wool and Tencel, which gives the rugs their shine. One piece, Magical gardenhas earthy tones of light pink, peach and orange, while the other, Sleeping floweroffers a beautiful contrast with its dominant blue hue to represent the vast skies. Kristensen was inspired by the colors that change in the garden with the rotation of the earth through the seasons, referencing peonies, lilacs, sweet peas and spring cherry blossoms to design the organic shapes in the rugs.
“I am always inspired by nature. Flowers are my muses,” says Kristensen. “Their vibrant colors, delicate textures, and otherworldly presence never cease to amaze me. Nature’s abundance reminds me of my connection to something greater, and it is that essence that I wanted to capture in the collection.”
