The hospital received the Get With the Guidelines® – Stroke Silver Plus Quality Achievement Award and the Target: Stroke Elite Award. “Bridgeport Hospital strives to provide world-class stroke care by adhering to the latest treatment guidelines,” said Jennifer Reynolds, MSN, RN, Stroke program manager. “This recognition underscores our dedication to providing timely, safe, and quality care for stroke patients.” Get With the Guidelines is a program that helps hospitals improve the care of stroke patients by promoting adherence to national guidelines. Participation in the program has been linked to improved patient outcomes, including reduced readmissions and lower mortality rates. Bridgeport Hospital also received the Target: Stroke Elite Award, which recognizes hospitals that meet specific criteria for shortening the time between patient arrival and treatment with thrombolytic therapy. This therapy can dissolve blood clots and improve blood flow to the brain, which can minimize the long-term effects of stroke. In addition, the hospital received the Target: Type 2 Diabetes Honor Roll Award, which recognizes hospitals that provide evidence-based care for patients with Type 2 diabetes who are at a higher risk of stroke complications. “We are thrilled to recognize Bridgeport Hospital for its dedication to caring for stroke patients,” said Steven Messe, MD, volunteer president of the American Heart Association’s Association Stroke System of Care Advisory Group. “These awards demonstrate the hospital’s commitment to providing the best possible care.”

Stroke is the fifth leading cause of death and a leading cause of disability in the US. Stroke
occurs when a blood vessel that carries oxygen and nutrients to the brain becomes blocked by a
clot or burst. When that happens, a part of the brain can’t get the blood and oxygen it needs,
so that brain cells die. Early detection and treatment of stroke are key to improving survival, minimizing
disability and accelerated recovery times.

Get With The Guidelines leverages the expertise of the American Heart Association and American
Stroke Association to partner with hospitals across the country to ensure patient care is aligned with
the latest research and evidence-based guidelines. Follow the guidelines – Stroke is an in-
hospital program to improve stroke care by promoting consistent adherence to this
guidelines that can minimize the long-term effects of stroke and even prevent death.

Each year, program participants are eligible for the award by demonstrating how their organization
is committed to providing quality care to stroke patients. In addition to following the treatment
guidelines, participants in Get With The Guidelines also provide education to patients to help them cope with
their health and recovery at home.

To qualify for this recognition, hospitals must meet specific criteria that shorten the time between consultations.

Honor Roll Award. Objective: Type 2 Diabetes aims to ensure that patients with Type 2 diabetes, who
are at higher risk of complications, receive the most up-to-date, evidence-based care
when you are in hospital due to a stroke.
