Atzili was among the prisoners taken captive in an October 7 attack on Kibbutz Nir Oz, where her husband, Aviv, was killed. The White House issued a statement confirming that National Security Advisor Jake Sullivan also attended the meeting. Biden’s meeting with Atzili and her family coincides with the anticipated resumption of hostage negotiations. Negotiations are reportedly progressing, with indications that Israel and Hamas may be narrowing their differences over a U.S.-backed proposal to release all remaining hostages through a three-phase deal. To facilitate the talks, President Biden has dispatched CIA Director William Burns and White House advisor Brett McGurk to the region. The efforts reflect the administration’s commitment to securing the release of American citizens held hostage overseas.

WASHINGTON (AP)—President Joe Biden met at the White House Monday with Liat Beinin Atzili, an Israeli-American teacher who has been held hostage in Gaza for more than 50 days by Hamas militants.

Atzili was among the prisoners captured on October 7 when Hamas militants ravaged Kibbutz Nir Oz. Her husband, Aviv, was killed in the attack.

The White House said in a statement that Biden’s national security adviser, Jake Sullivan, was present at Biden’s meeting with Atzili and her family.

The meeting comes as hostage negotiations are expected to resume this week amid signs that differences between Israel and Hamas over a US-backed proposal to release all remaining hostages in a three-phase deal are easing.

Biden has sent CIA Director William Burns and White House adviser Brett McGurk to the region for the talks.
