A suspected drunk driver rammed his car into the San Leandro Police Department headquarters Sunday morning, police said.

According to San Leandro Police Lt. Abe Teng, officers found the 34-year-old driver unresponsive in the Lexus sedan and arrested him after he regained consciousness.

Police suspect alcohol played a role in the crash because of items found in the vehicle and because the driver showed symptoms of being under the influence, Teng said.

The driver was booked into Santa Rita Jail after being medically cleared at a local hospital. No other motorists or pedestrians were injured in the crash, the department said.

“Sometimes we are hit by crime,” the department said in a video posted on its Facebook page showing the aftermath of the collision.

The video shows officers inspecting the silver sedan with its front bumper off. In another scene, black skid marks lead to a white wall emblazoned with the City of San Leandro seal.

According to data from the National Highway Transportation Administration, cities across the country are seeing an increase in drunk driving, and the number of cases has only increased in recent years.

And San Leandro was ranked in the middle of California cities for drunk driving in 2021, the most recent ranking.

“Drinking and driving? We are your ride,” the police video ends in large white letters.
