This was revealed by Sumita Dawra, Secretary of the Ministry of Labour and Employment, citing data from the Periodic Labour Force Survey (PLFS). Speaking at an event organized by the Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) and the Employers’ Federation of India (EFI), Dawra highlighted the government’s efforts to facilitate business operations through reforms such as decriminalization of labor laws and measures to increase women’s participation in the workforce. She emphasized that reforms related to social security and labor welfare aim to promote inclusive growth. Additionally, the codification of 29 labor laws into four and the establishment of a national career service portal are underway. Dawra further noted the presence of around 1 crore gig workers in India and anticipated the gig economy to provide employment to approximately 2.4 crore people by 2030. The government has established a task force to investigate the impact of artificial intelligence on the future of work, with Dawra calling for enhanced research in this area.

Global Capability Centres (GCCs) and startups have become major players in job creation in India.

Together, these initiatives have created about eight crore new jobs in the past five years, said Sumita Dawra, secretary, Ministry of Labour and Employment.

Dawra said this at an event organised in the national capital by the Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) and the Employers’ Federation of India (EFI), referring to the Periodic Labour Force Survey (PLFS).

She also announced that the ministry is implementing reforms to facilitate doing business, such as decriminalization of labor laws and increasing women’s participation in the labor market.

She noted that reforms such as social security and labour welfare are expected to boost inclusive growth in India.

In addition, “29 labour laws have been codified into four labour laws. A national career service portal is operational and data from the Ministry of Skills is being integrated,” Dawra said.

She further added that India “has about 1 crore gig workers and the gig economy is expected to employ about 2.4 crore people by 2030.”

Meanwhile, the government has also set up a task force to examine the impact of artificial intelligence on the future of work, the senior official said, calling for more research.
