The NTT IndyCar Series travels east for a historic weekend at the Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course.
After a thrilling round at Laguna Seca, which saw Alex Palou emerge victorious from Colton Herta, the series now turns its attention to Ohio for the ninth race weekend of the 2024 season. That weekend is of great significance as it marks the long-awaited debut date of IndyCar’s hybrid engine.

After 18 months of meticulous development and rigorous testing by Honda and Chevrolet engineers and IndyCar personnel, the series will finally deploy the hybrid unit for the first time in competitive action. The unit features an initial power increase of approximately 60 horsepower, in an effort to improve racing action and make the series even more competitive.
The current 2.2-liter V6 twin-turbocharged combustion engine is mated to a Motor Generator Unit (MGU) and a supercapacitor Energy Storage System (ESS) with a capacity of 320 kilojoules per lap. Both fit in the bell housing between the ICE and the gearbox.
This new power unit also features an additional ‘push-to-pass’ option for overtaking, providing more opportunities for passing.
