Around 2:15 p.m., officers responded to a report of a suspicious individual in a vehicle near a business on Route 97 in Barryville. Encountering the suspect, Paul Gosselin, 63, of Augusta, Maine, officers were informed he possessed a gun and intended to shoot at them. As officers attempted to apprehend Gosselin, he fled to another business nearby and exited his vehicle. He then re-entered his vehicle and drove towards a Lumberland County trooper on foot. Recognizing the imminent threat to the officer, another officer fired multiple rounds, injuring Gosselin. He was transported to a hospital and remains in stable condition. A state trooper shot and wounded a driver who allegedly tried to hit a police officer with his vehicle in Sullivan County Tuesday afternoon, state police reported Wednesday.

According to state police, the incident began around 2:15 p.m. Tuesday afternoon when officers responded to a report of a suspicious person in a vehicle at a business on Route 97 in Barryville.

Officers located the suspect, who said he had a gun and was going to shoot at officers, state police said.

According to state police, they attempted to apprehend the man, later identified as Paul Gosselin, 63, of Augusta, Maine, when he fled to a second business on Route 97 and got out of his vehicle.

Gosselin then got back into his vehicle and began driving toward a Lumberland County trooper who was on foot near Gosselin’s vehicle, state police said.

An officer saw the vehicle moving toward the officer and fired multiple shots, hitting Gosselin once, state police said.

Officers administered first aid to Gosselin, and he was then transported by emergency medical services to a nearby hospital. He is currently in stable condition.

No charges have been filed, but state police said the investigation is ongoing and more updates will be released as they become available.
