Viral Video Sparks Outrage A video widely circulated online showed EFCC officers allegedly assaulting the manager of Regional Hotel in Ojo, Lagos, during an early morning sting operation on June 27, 2024. The incident reportedly occurred as part of an investigation into alleged cybercrime activities. Disciplinary Team Formed Following the public outcry, EFCC Executive Chairman Ola Olukoyede ordered the arrest of the officers involved and their appearance before a joint Disciplinary Team on July 1, 2024. The team will probe the allegations and recommend appropriate disciplinary action. EFCC Condemns Unprofessional Conduct Olukoyede emphasized that the commission strongly condemns the officers’ alleged misconduct. He stressed that the EFCC is committed to holding its staff accountable for any unprofessional or unethical behavior. Criticism from the Public The viral video triggered a wave of criticism from netizens, who questioned the EFCC’s modus operandi and raised concerns that innocent individuals were being targeted. Investigation to Determine Accountability The ongoing investigation aims to determine the officers’ culpability in the assault allegations. If found responsible, they may face disciplinary measures or even criminal charges.

The Executive Chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), Mr Ola Olukoyede, has stated that the commission has set up a disciplinary team to investigate the case of two of its operatives who were seen in a viral video allegedly assaulting a female manager during a raid on Regional Hotel in Ojo area of ​​Lagos State.

Oyewale noted that the officers were seen in a viral video attacking the hotel staff during an early morning sting operation on Thursday, June 27, 2024.

The EFCC boss, therefore, ordered the arrest of the two officers and that they be produced before a joint Disciplinary Team comprising the Appointments, Promotions and Disciplinary Affairs Committee and the Ethics and Integrity Department.

According to the report, “They will appear before the team at the Commission headquarters in Abuja on Monday, July 1, 2024.

“The team would investigate the officers’ case and recommend appropriate disciplinary action against them.”

Olukoyede stressed that every effort will be made to hold the officers accountable for their unprofessional conduct.

Just think of the anti-corruption agency officials who, as part of an undercover operation, allegedly assaulted a lady and hotel guests for alleged cybercrime.

However, several reactions have followed the viral video by X-users who were critical of the modus operandi of the EFCC officials which borders on targeting the wrong persons.
