The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) has announced a $2.4 million investment to install energy-efficient LED lighting throughout the bridges. The project will replace the existing high-pressure sodium lamps with advanced LED fixtures, offering several significant benefits: * Improved Visibility: LEDs emit a brighter, more focused light, significantly improving visibility for drivers, pedestrians, and cyclists. * Energy Efficiency: LED lighting consumes significantly less energy than traditional lighting, resulting in substantial cost savings and reduced environmental impact. * Increased Lifespan: LEDs have a longer lifespan than traditional bulbs, reducing maintenance and replacement costs over time. * Improved Aesthetics: The warm, white light emitted by LEDs will create a more inviting and aesthetically pleasing environment for residents and visitors alike. The project will begin in the spring of 2023 and is expected to be completed by the fall. It will encompass all three Golden Bridges: * Roberto Clemente Bridge: Spanning the Allegheny River at the northern end of Pittsburgh. * Andy Warhol Bridge: Spanning the Monongahela River near downtown. * Fort Duquesne Bridge: Spanning the Ohio River at the confluence of the Allegheny and Monongahela Rivers. “These bridges are a symbol of our city’s rich history and vibrant future,” said Pittsburgh Mayor Ed Gainey. “This LED lighting project will not only improve safety and visibility but also add to the overall beauty of our skyline.” PennDOT Secretary Yassmin Gramian emphasized the project’s importance for the state and its citizens. “We are committed to investing in infrastructure that improves safety, reduces traffic congestion, and enhances the quality of life for Pennsylvanians.” The Golden Bridges are an integral part of Pittsburgh’s transportation system, connecting the city’s neighborhoods and providing access to major attractions. With the installation of LED lighting, these iconic bridges will continue to serve as a beacon of progress and a source of civic pride for years to come.
