The program, which will be implemented in phases over the next six months, aims to increase the number of recyclable materials collected from Atlanta households and businesses. Residents will be provided with new recycling bins and educational materials, while businesses will be encouraged to adopt recycling practices that meet specific standards. Speaking at a press conference, Mayor Bottoms emphasized the urgency of addressing Atlanta’s waste management issues. “We cannot afford to continue sending tons of recyclable materials to landfills,” she said. “This new program is a major step towards achieving our goal of becoming a zero-waste city.” The program will prioritize the collection of the following recyclable materials: * Paper and cardboard * Plastics (numbers 1-7) * Aluminum and tin cans * Glass bottles and jars Residents and businesses will be provided with detailed instructions on what materials can and cannot be recycled. The city will also conduct educational campaigns to promote awareness and compliance. To facilitate the efficient collection and processing of recyclables, the city has partnered with Republic Services, a national waste management company. Republic will provide the recycling bins, transportation, and sorting services. The new recycling program is expected to create jobs and boost the local economy. Republic Services anticipates hiring additional employees to staff the recycling operations.
